The Benefits of Bone Broth

The Benefits of Bone Broth

Bone broth can have SO many benefits for your dog (and cat!) Here’s why:

1.) Bone Broth Is Good For Your Dog’s Joints

In the book Deep Nutrition, Dr. Cate Shanahan writes “The health of your joints depends upon the health of the collagen in your ligaments, tendons, and on the ends of your bones. Collagens are a large family of biomolecules, which include the glycosaminoglycans, very special molecules that help keep our joints healthy.”

Bone broth is filled with glycosaminoglycans, one of them being glucosamine. Bone broth is filled with glucosamine AND it’s filled with other joint protecting compounds such as chondroitin and hyaluronic acid.

Glycosaminoglycans from bone broth are resistant to digestion and are absorbed into the body in their intact form. In the words of Dr. Shanahan, “They act like hormones, stimulating cells called fibroblasts, which lay down collagen in the joints, tendons, ligaments, and even the arteries.”

2.) Bone Broth Helps Your Dog’s Liver Detox

The liver is the detoxer of the body. Your dog’s liver works hard daily as they lay on floors treated with chemicals, walk on grass that’s been treated with chemicals, and suffers through toxic dewormers, flea and tick preventives, drugs, antibiotics, vaccines and more.

The livers ability to process all of this is limited by the availability of the amino acid glycine.  The good news is that bone broth is FILLED with glycine, which is just what your dog’s liver needs.

3.) Bone Broth Promotes Your Dog’s Healthy Gut

The lining of the intestines naturally contains millions of tiny holes (isn’t that amazing?) that allow the digested nutrients to enter the body. Stress, poor diet and bacterial overgrowth can cause more holes to open or to become bigger. This results in what is known as “leaky gut”.

The issue with these large holes in leaky gut is that things can pass through that aren’t supposed to, such as undigested food matter, toxins and yeast. The body recognizes these undigested food particles as foreign invaders and will attack them. This is how allergies and food sensitivities develop.

Bone broth is a great solution to this problem as it is filled with a gooey substance that can plug those leaky holes….gelatin!

4.) Bone Broth Is Great Nutrition For Your Sick Dog

Bone broth is a great way to clear up diarrhea and get you dog back on solid foods, or provide extra nutrition for your dog that doesn’t have much of an appetite.

When there is enough gelatin in the diet, the body’s need for protein from meat can be reduced by nearly 50%. Bone broth is also an excellent source of important minerals and can strengthen the immune system.

Bone broth is also full of glycine, which aids digestion by helping to regulate the synthesis of bile salts and secretion of gastric acid.
