Jump starting your pet’s immune system with mushrooms-

Let’s talk mushrooms! There are SO many to choose from and mushrooms boost the immune system, decrease inflammation (keep in mind all dis-ease stems; no pun intended; from inflammation, enhance brain cognition, and even fight cancer.

With so many mushrooms to choose from; hopefully it’s helpful to briefly describe the benefits of each:


Cordyceps:

Increase energy & stamina

This fungus grows at extremely high altitudes of 12,000 + feet. They grow from the bodies of mummified caterpillars and further mummify. In TCM (Traditional Chinese Medicine) it has used for centuries to treat diabetes, liver problems and cancer. Many people claim that it increases endurance and longevity in the body. This powerful mushroom regulates the metabolism as well as AMPK which regulates how energy is used in the body. It also can aid with anemia which causes fatigue. Cordyceps increase oxogen to the body and help to decrease exhaustion. This mushroom is great for geriatric pets as well as those with cancer.

 

Chaga:

Decreases inflammation and is loaded with antioxidants

This mushroom is rich in antioxidants and has a higher ORAC ( antioxidant rating than blueberries! It is an antioxidant, antiviral, anti-inflammatory, antibacterial, and has capabilities to decrease tumors. Pets with IBD (Irritable Bowel Disease) experienced pain relief as well as decreased oxidative stress. Don’t be worried that it’s black that i due to the fact that it contains melanin which is also found in the skin, nervous system and even the eyes.. The melanin “exhibit high antioxidant and gene protecting properties. Chaga also contains betulin acid that kills cancer cells. It also, as many other mushrooms is rich in antioxidants, and is anti-inflammatory and antiviral.

 

Reishi

The Immunity Queen

This mushroom has been used in TCM for over 2,000 years and is lauded for it’s powerful antioxidants, anti-inflammatory, anti-tumor, and immune enhancement. It strengthens Qi (commonly known as the "life force”in the body). It’s used for heart disease ( which is currently the # killer in in dogs) as well as hepatitis.

 

Maitake

Balances Blood Sugar Levels

This mushroom is found in Japan, China and North America. Again this mushroom has antioxidant, anti tumor, anti-inflammatory benefits as well as increases the immune system. Diabetes is an increasing problem with pets now due to sedentary lifestyles and highly processed food. This amazing mushroom helps decrease weight, cholesterol and insulin. It also triggers glutathione (known as the master anti oxidant) and SOD (Superoxide Dismutase) probably the mot crucial antioxidant because it’s capable of disarming free radical damage.

 

Lion’s Mane

Increases Brain cognition and helps with Nerve Damage

This fluffy, pom pom looking mushroom is white and resembles a lions mane. This fungus improves brain function and plasticity, while decreasing cell shrinkage and neurotoxins in the brain. It’s also rich in mycelium (the roots of the mushroom) which actually protect the brain.
